“Miss Sophie – I think we’ll have ginjinha with the soup.”
James – Ginjinha with the soup. Good. With berries, fresh or natural, Miss Sophie?
Ah. Good. By the way: Are we using the same procedural dynamic as last year, Miss Sophie?
Miss Sophie – The same procedural dynamic as every year, James. Is it a dry ginjinha, James?
James – Yes, a very dry ginjinha, Miss Sophie. Very dry. It’s tongue-twisting. It came straight from the cellar this morning, Miss Sophie.”
in, Dinner for One by Lauri Wylie
In 1934, the sketch Dinner for One by British actor Lauri Wylie premiered in London, and it would become the most famous of his dramatic creations. The short play consists of a situation that emerges from Comedy and the Absurd.
It’s about an elderly woman celebrating her one hundred and tenth birthday in the sole company of her butler, who hosts an illusory dinner for four deceased friends.
The butler serves the four absent guests as if they were there, interpreting them one by one as they toast the birthday girl’s health.
